Vega GNC and Functional Engineer in the VEGA Launcher System Development
Avionics, Vega and Space Rider Development Programmes, Space Transportation Development Department, Directorate of Space Transportation. This post is classified in the A2-A4 grade band on the Coordinated Organisations’ salary scale. Under the authority of the VEGA Launcher System Development Avionics Manager, the postholder will be involved in Vega Development and Exploitation activities. Within the frame of the Vega development, the range of activities encompasses the development of Vega-C, Vega-E and relevant Vega spin-offs (e.g. Space Rider, SSMS dispenser, Venus) in the field of functional avionics equipment (e.g. onboard computer, multi-functional inertial and reference units, communication bus, power subsystems), Guidance, Navigation & Control algorithm engineering and system EMC engineering. Specific responsibilities will include:
managing the technical activities related to the design, development, qualification, assembly, integration, testing in Europe and French Guiana, acceptance, flight and post-flight of the GNC and functional systems under the abovementioned range of activities;
tasks will include the following contributions: - trade-off analysis of potential evolutions of architectures and technologies, including recurrent and non-recurrent cost aspects; - apportioning technical requirements from system level to GNC and functional subsystems, defining the relevant internal and external interface specifications, from launch system down to launcher system & subsystems, launch base, launch range; - drafting of statements of work, evaluating industrial offers, negotiating industrial contracts, evaluating industry deliverables; - preparing the relevant development milestones, including specific project reviews at system and subsystem(s) levels, within this area of responsibility; Within the frame of the Vega exploitation, the range of activities encompasses technical management of the GNC and functional systems in Vega Production. Duties notably include:
eCPB-2017-0510 monitoring the manufacture and acceptance of Vega elements, ensuring compliance of the mission-specific configuration with the product(s) qualification range; ESA/VN-ESRIN(2017)003, REV. 1
assessment of revisions of the definition (ECP) of GNC and functional systems and their possible impact on the Vega launch vehicle’s qualification status;
technical guidance on dealing with flight anomalies/non-conformances, assessment of requests for waivers/deviations; following up technical activities related to dealing with components obsolescence and actions aimed at reducing recurrent costs during the exploitation phase. Applicants for this post should have a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering field, with a strong background in the design, development, assembly, integration, testing and acceptance of GNC and functional systems for space transportation applications. Consolidated experience within the European launchers sector is an asset, preferably coupled with familiarity in one or more space transportation spin-off applications (i.e. atmospheric re-entry and/or small space-crafts missions). For behavioural competencies expected from ESA staff in general, please refer to the ESA Competency Framework. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.
