Opto-Mechanical Design & Integration Engineer

Description: 

ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is a 16-nation intergovernmental research organization for ground-based astronomy. ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and is supported by Austria, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, along with the host state of Chile.

This vacancy is part of the NAOMI project (New Adaptive Optics Module for Interferometry). NAOMI is about to put the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) on steroids. NAOMI modules will be installed on each of ESOs 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs), which form part of the VLTI at Paranal Observatory, bringing adaptive optics technology to the ATs.In this position, you will be responsible for the design, modeling, procurement, and integration of the NAOMI module and its comnponents.

  • Update and correction of opto-mechanical model based on CAD Autodesk Inventor;
  • Design of opto-mechanical components (mainly tooling) with CAD Autodesk Inventor;
  • Modelling of part of the ATs based on .dwg or .dxf 2D drawings to properly interface NAOMI within the ATs;
  • Release of manufacturing drawing ready for procurements;
  • Procurement of mechanical components;
  • Verification of procured components;
  • Participation in the integration in Garching, Germany;
  • Participation in the packing in Garching, Germany;
  • Participation in the integration on Paranal, Chile (2 to 3 missions of approx. 14 days are planned);
  • Re-design of the spider of the ATs;
  • Full design package delivery for the PAC of NAOMI;
Ideal Candidate: 
  • University degree in Opto-Mechanics or Mechanical Engineering;
  • At least 3 years of experience in the design of Opto-Mechanical components with CAD Autodesk Inventor;
  • At least 2 years of experience in the assembly, integration and test of Opto-Mechanical components;
  • Good command of spoken and written English;
  • Preparedness and physical fitness for occasional travel to Paranal, Chile (~2600m);
