The European Space Agency is ATGs biggest client. They are an international organisation with 22 member states with sites in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, UK and Belgium. ESA is Europes gateway to Space!

ESTEC is the European Space Research and Technology Centre of the European Space Agency ESA.It is based in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. It is the largest ESA establishment, responsible for thetechnical preparation and management of ESA space projects and providing technical support to ESAssatellite, space exploration and human spaceflight activities.The ESTEC IT landscape consists of several small to medium size server rooms and two maincommunication infrastructure centres, mainly referred to as network core areas.In order to cope with the growing demand for effective IT infrastructure and services provision, a newdata centre (ESTEC Main Computer Room or EMCR) has been put into operation during Q1/2017. Thisnew facility also allows consolidating the various ESTEC server rooms into one, centrally managed datacentre.

  • 1. Data Centre Management:Act as main point of contact for all ESTEC data centre related activities;
  • Ensure all deployments are installed to applicable internal, manufacture and industry standards;
  • Provide smart hands problem solving support (server reboots, backups, visual inspections etc.);
  • Monitor and follow-up the data centre routine activities;
  • Coordinate data centre changes and incidents;
  • Trigger agreed procedures when required;
  • Perform compliance and risk analysis of data centre activities and manage escalations;
  • Distribute and communicate to all teams relevant information to optimize efficiency and minimize risks in data centre activities;
  • Ensure that everything in data centre is in line with approved procedures and raise corrective actions when needed;
  • Monitor the progress of open actions and ensure timely closure;
  • Schedule and coordinate data centre activities in order to improve overall efficiency and reduce risks;
  • Inform the Technical Officer when issues arise e.g.: capacity thresholds are exceeded etc.;
  • Make post implementation reviews and lessons-learnt analysis;
  • Perform the continuous evaluation of processes and coordination activities looking for improvements;
  • Analyse interlock and dependencies between processes;
  • Detect on a regular basis any missing procedures;
  • Update data centre procedures when necessary;
  • 2. Data Collection and Documentation:The introduction of a Data Centre Infrastructure Management tool (DCIM) based on the Open Source software open DCIM provides a professional environment for documentation the existing data centre infrastructure and a proper capacity management.The DCIM tool is yet to be populated with all necessary data. A reasonable effort shall be made to capture all data for each device and supporting EM infrastructures;
  • 3.Data Centre Consolidation and Optimisation:The introduction of a new ESTEC Main Computer Room allows for the consolidation of the various ESTEC server rooms into one single facility. Support is to be provided to the ESTEC Data Centre Manager to achieve this task in an effective and efficient way. In particular minimising the impact on the IT service provision and optimising the existing setup by IT service consolidation, move of existing services to the ESA Virtual Environment (ESACloud) and decommissioning of obsolete components.
